When I first started writing (some 20 years ago), I never had a content strategy.

And it took me a few years before I finally gave in and created one.

I used to think that having a content strategy was a useless step that would take away my precious time and suppress my creativity.

But when I struggled to see meaningful results, I realised it was important to have a clear plan before I started writing.

Now, I’m an advocate for content strategies (and I’d be happy to help if you’re stuck creating one).

Anyway, here are five reasons why you should always start with a content strategy.

1. Clear direction and focus

A content strategy provides a roadmap for content creation. It helps you define your goals, target audience, and key messages. With a clear direction, you can focus on creating content that aligns with your business objectives and resonates with your audience (which prevents wasted time and resources on content that doesn’t serve a specific purpose).

2. Consistent brand voice

Maintaining a consistent brand voice is essential for building brand identity and trust. A content strategy outlines your brand’s tone, style, and messaging guidelines. This way, you can guarantee that every piece of content, whether it’s a blog post, social media update, or email newsletter, reflects your brand’s personality and values.

3. Improved audience engagement

Understanding your audience is a fundamental part of a content strategy. By identifying your audience’s needs, preferences, and pain points, you can create content that engages them. And content that speaks directly to your audience’s interests and challenges is more likely to capture their attention and have them engage with you.

4. Efficient use of resources

A content strategy helps you plan and allocate resources more effectively. By outlining your content goals, topics, formats, and distribution channels in advance, you can simplify and amplify your content creation efforts. This saves time and helps you use your resources efficiently.

5. Measurable results

A content strategy allows you to set specific, measurable goals for your content marketing efforts. By tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as website traffic, engagement rates, and conversion rates, you can assess how effective your content is. This helps you make better decisions and optimise your strategy for even better results.
