7 THINGS I LEARNED FROM FOCUSING ON ONE NICHE

In 2008, I interviewed Zoheir Garanah, Egypt’s minister of tourism at the time, for an article about the country’s growing tourism sector.
He spoke to me, among other things, about Egypt’s plans to position the country as a tourism and investment hub in the Middle East. And that required a boost in urbanisation.
I was editor-in-chief of Best Destinations of Egypt, a big black book featuring places to visit in Egypt. The publication was sponsored by airlines, hotels, and real estate companies, who had each secured double-page spread ads and three-page advertorials in return for their generous contributions.
My job included interviewing those sponsors and writing their advertorials (because, for some reason, they were too lazy to write them themselves).
That sparked my interest in writing for the real estate market. And I decided that that would be my new niche.
I spent the next 12 years developing creative concepts and writing marketing copy exclusively for this industry. I eventually had to break out of the cycle, but it was a good ride. I truly enjoyed specialising in one niche.
Here are 7 things I learned from focusing on one niche.
1. It provides great expertise
Immersing yourself in a niche helps you develop expertise in that industry, positioning you as an authority with a deep understanding of its details and trends.
2. It helps you dominate your market
Concentrating on a niche gives you the power to dominate your market, surpass competitors, and become the go-to choice for clients seeking specialised solutions.
3. It allows you to ask for premium rates
As a niche specialist, you have the ability to ask for premium rates for your services, as clients recognise the value and expertise you bring to the table.
4. It helps you achieve personal mastery
Specialising in a niche leads to professional success and establishes personal fulfilment as you master your craft. Over time, you’ll be able to tackle challenges head-on and make a lasting impact in that industry.
5. It boosts your brand authority
Specialising in a niche positions you as a thought leader and boosts your brand authority within the industry. You’ll end up earning respect and admiration from peers and clients alike.
6. It improves client trust
Clients are more likely to trust and invest in a specialist who demonstrates deep expertise in their specific niche, leading to stronger client relationships and increased loyalty.
7. It drives targeted leads
Niche specialisation allows you to attract highly targeted leads who are specifically seeking the unique solutions and expertise you offer. This results in a higher quality of leads and improved conversion rates.
