In 2021, I took on a client in the customs brokerage industry.

I suddenly found myself immersed in a world of tariffs, trade regulations, and import/export specifics—things I didn’t understand or have any experience with.

Working with a new niche is always challenging. But I’m lucky I got to work with a super supportive client.

Here are seven tips that helped me write for a new niche, deliver impactful results for my new client, and get great testimonials.

1. Immerse yourself in the industry

The first step in mastering a new niche is to immerse yourself fully in the industry. Dive into industry publications, trade journals, and online forums to understand the key concepts, terminology, and trends that shape the landscape.

2. Lean on subject matter experts

Don’t be afraid to reach out to industry experts for insights and guidance. Conduct interviews, attend industry webinars, and network with professionals in the field. Tapping into their expertise can provide invaluable insights and perspectives.

3. Research, research, research

Dedicate ample time to researching and studying the nuances of the new niche. Explore case studies, market reports, and competitor analyses to identify key opportunities and challenges. This will help you build your messaging accordingly.

4. Ask questions and seek clarification

Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek clarification from your client or colleagues when you see unfamiliar concepts or terminology. Clear communication is essential to ensure you’re on the same page and can deliver content that meets your client’s expectations.

5. Stay curious and open-minded

Approach your work with a sense of curiosity and open-mindedness, embracing the opportunity to learn and grow with each new project. Stay flexible and adaptable and be willing to pivot your approach based on feedback and new insights.

6. Iterate and refine your approach

As you gain deeper insights into the new niche, iterate and refine your copywriting approach accordingly. Test different messaging strategies, headlines, and calls-to-action to determine what resonates most with the target audience.

7. Celebrate your progress

Finally, remember to celebrate your progress and achievements. Working in a new niche can be challenging, but with perseverance and dedication, you’ll develop more strength and knowledge than ever before.
